Description

When Ari Up and Adrian Sherwood assembled the New Age Steppers collective to record their third studio album, Foundation Steppers, in 1983, they made a conscious decision to move away from the abrasive, experimental dub sound that had marked out their previous two sets. With a formidable backing band and horn section lending a hand, and frequent Sherwood collaborator Bim Sherman sharing mic duties with Ari Up, the result was a set closer in tone to traditional roots reggae – albeit with a post-punk twist – than anything else in their catalogue. Here reissued on wax, Foundation Steppers remains a fine album, offering an accessible entry point to the discography of one of British dub music’s most distinctive acts.
